Truth About Drinking
First, I would like to clarify that I don’t believe that
drinking in itself isn’t a sin provided it doesn’t lead to drunkenness.
There are actually 3 issues that believers should consider about
drinking:
1. Relationship with God.
- One of the big problems with drinking is that the first area
of your senses that goes is your judgment. This causes many people to
make unwise decisions which are contrary to God’s Will for their life.
The initial feeling of euphoria almost immediately takes the place of
our fellowship with the Lord. This feeling progresses to a false sense
of well-being without the need for God. The more this false sense of
well-being replaces our fellowship with God, the further away from Him we
become, and the greater chance of increased sinful activities.
Jesus stated that the most important commandment was to “love
the Lord your God with all your heart, soul and mind.” If we are
negatively affecting our relationship with God by replacing it with the
temporary security of alcohol, this violates the most important
commandment and also is detrimental to developing a closer walk with the
Lord.
2. Our appearance to others as a Christian.
Anything we do or think should be honoring to God, even in the
privacy of our own homes. Some people can drink 1 or 2 glasses of wine
at home and stop at that. Others drink the entire bottle and go to get
more. Those who can drink responsibly at home or in private can still
cause a brother to stumble if that brother should appear at their home
or private location while the drinking is in progress. The “strong”
brother who can drink may also be speaking with the “weak” brother who
cannot control his drinking and tell the weak brother that he does have
a drink on occasion. This can place the thought in the weak brother’s
mind that maybe it would be acceptable for him to drink also. This will
likely result in unnecessary anguish in the weak brother’s thoughts of
his drinking problem and his desire to attempt to drink responsibly.
Just the mere thought of a believer drinking in the mind of a weak
brother could cause him to stumble.
(I know from personal experience about this struggle. Being a
recovering alcoholic myself, I face struggles in my mind with thoughts
of other believers who drink. This has caused me to question whether I
might be able to drink, and struggles knowing that I cannot do it.)
3. Supporting a sinful industry.
By purchasing alcohol in any form one supports an industry that
is inherently sinful. The larger and more powerful the alcohol industry
becomes, the more resources it has to promote drinking. The majority of
their customers are either alcoholics or using the alcohol at events and
occasions with ungodly behaviors. Having alcohol readily available
creates ever-increasing incidents of abuse, teenage drinking, motor
vehicle deaths, unwanted pregnancies and disease from over indulgence.
As Christians we are supposed to be set apart (sanctified) to show the
world what the Lord has done for us while giving Him the glory. When we
participate in the same sinful activities as the world, we are not
separated. In this issue of drinking we do have control over preventing
the money that God has entrusted us with being given over to businesses
that are not representing the His interests and the furthering of His
kingdom. We have little or no control over the type of business ethics
promoted by manufacturers of many items we need to purchase. However, we
do have the ability to refrain from contributing to these ungodly things
in the case of purchasing alcoholic beverages.
Our purpose in following Christ is to bring glory to God. Our
joy in following Christ is fellowship with God. By making this our goal,
we can abstain from drinking and worldly pleasures and let the Lord fill
our lives with His love.
